**About Elsa Ross**
My name is Elsa Ross, born Elsa Szpidbaum on November 2, 1936, in Warsaw, Poland. My grandfather on my father’s side was a rabbi turned businessman with a candy factory. My father manufactured candy wrappers, and I remember playing with them.

We lived on Panska Street, and I have faint memories of hiding under furs near my grandfather’s factory. In the ghetto, quarters were cramped, and I was told not to make noise. I remember my mother crying at a sewing machine and voices urging me to run at night toward a truck. When I was separated from my parents, I was told never to reveal I was Jewish.

I was taken to an apartment where I learned Catholic prayers and then moved to an orphanage outside Warsaw. I recall a large sleeping room and being told to run faster during air raids. A friend of my mother visited every Sunday. I cherished these visits and the taste of bread dipped in cod liver oil. I adopted a Catholic identity as Elzunia Zalewska, which has impacted my entire life.

After the war, my aunt came for me; I initially thought she was my mother. She took me to Krakow, where I experienced freedom for the first time. Later, my father’s twin sister, Anna, took me away, saying, “Your son survived; my son didn’t, so I’m going to take her.” We left Poland. I’ve never been one to ask questions, and perhaps this began early in my life.
