**About Ruth Steinfeld**
Every Sabbath, Alfred Krell, wearing a long coat and black hat, proudly walked to synagogue with his daughters, Lea and Ruth, in Sinsheim, Germany. Their early years were “wonderful,” filled with comfort and security, though marred by growing antisemitism. Alfred, a gourmet import business owner and synagogue caretaker, provided for the family, and his wife, Anna, created a loving home. Lea was born in 1932, followed by Ruth in 1933, around the time Hitler came to power.

In 1940, the Krells were deported to the internment camp of Gurs in France. Alfred was separated from Anna and their daughters, who endured harsh conditions but found comfort in being together. Facing dire circumstances, Alfred and Anna entrusted Lea and Ruth to the Children’s Aid Society (OSE), a Jewish organization that promised to shelter them. The girls never saw their parents again.

Lea and Ruth lived in group homes and foster care, posing as Catholics to avoid detection. When suspicions arose, they were moved to another orphanage until the war’s end. In 1946, their grandfather brought them to the United States, but he passed away six months later. The sisters moved in with unkind relatives until a Jewish relief organization offered them a chance to move to Houston.

Lea married twice, raising four children, while Ruth married, raised three daughters, and ran a successful hair salon. Both were deeply involved in Jewish causes and were early public speakers about their Holocaust experiences, serving on the board of Holocaust Museum Houston.
